If you’re a Disney history fan, this 90-minute tour of Disneyland’s Main Street USA is a must-do. From hidden details to intimate stories about Walt Disney himself, it’s the perfect blend of nostalgia, history, and charm. I recently had a chance to take this tour and even as a die hard Disney adult this brought a whole new view of Disney magic for me. The best part, it ends with a visit to Walt’s very own apartment.
Kicking Off the Tour
The journey begins at the tour garden, which is right inside the entrance to Main Street, next to City Hall. The check-in process is super easy—just arrive at the gazebo 15 minutes before your tour time and check in with the team. I booked mine through the Disneyland app for $160 per person. I felt like this cost was a good value for the 90 min tour and everything you get to see.

A Walk Down Main Street USA
Once you’re all checked in, the guide starts walking you down both sides of Main Street, diving deep into its theming and hidden details. If you’re like me, you’ve probably walked this street countless times without noticing some of these smallest details.
One of the coolest aspects of the tour was learning about the names on the windows above the shops. They’re not just random names—they’re a tribute to people who played significant roles in the creation of Disneyland. Each one has a story, and some are even a nod to Walt’s hometown of Marceline, Missouri.
We also explored some fascinating history about the original shops on Main Street. It felt like stepping back in time, uncovering the charm and nostalgia of a bygone era. Who knew that Disneyland used to have a pharmacy that gave out vitamins or an orange juice shop? These quirky little details made it feel like we were reliving a piece of history, adding a magical layer to the experience.

Hidden Mickeys, Stories, and Nostalgia
As we walked, we hunted for Hidden Mickeys along Main Street (and there are more than you’d think!) and heard stories about Walt’s own adventures here. One particularly funny story was about how Walt got caught walking down Main Street in his bathrobe after the park had closed because he wanted some fresh orange juice. Just imagining that scene made the street feel even more alive with his spirit.
We also stopped by the fire station where the fire wagon that used to be pulled down Main Street still sits. This was a fun moment because it includes a glimpse into Walt’s family life—there’s even an authentic fireman’s pole that his grandson remembers sliding down from the upstairs apartment! Apparently, they eventually had to close off the pole because a guest once used it to sneak into the apartment.

The Highlight: Walt’s Main Street Apartment
The absolute highlight of the tour was, of course, stepping inside Walt Disney’s apartment above the fire station. Just knowing that Walt stayed here, spent time with his family, and watched his dream come to life below was awe-inspiring. The guide shared stories about Walt’s time in the apartment, as well as memories from his family members. Some of their personal memorabilia still remains in the apartment, giving it an extra layer of warmth and history.
We spent about 20 minutes soaking it all in, and then the real treat came—a PhotoPass photographer arrived to take pictures of me inside the apartment. I even got a special shot looking out of the window at Main Street, with the iconic lamp that always stays lit in Walt’s memory. It was a surreal moment, knowing Walt himself had looked out from that very window as his dream came to life. I’m not sure if it was because I was the only one on my tour, but the photographer took quite a few photos, making the experience feel even more personal.

Wrapping Up on the Terrace
After our time inside, we exited to the apartment’s terrace. Here, we were treated to a snack and a drink while enjoying the sounds of Disneyland around us. Fun fact: The jungle cruise’s sounds used to keep Walt up at night, which you can still hear clearly from the terrace. It was such a peaceful way to end the tour, relaxing in a place that held so much history.
Final Thoughts
As the tour wrapped up, right on time at 90 minutes, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the park and its creator. This experience gave me such a unique, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the history of Disneyland and Walt Disney’s life within it.
If you’re a Disney fan, this tour is more than worth it. It’s a journey through time, full of hidden gems and stories that will make you see Main Street in a whole new light. Plus, the visit to Walt’s apartment? That’s the kind of Disney magic that stays with you long after the tour ends.
