Can adults go on a Disney Cruise without kids?

We did and here’s what we thought!

Earlier this month we embarked on a Disney Cruise of the Mediterranean on the Disney Dream. This trip was just Nathan and I and we had such a wonderful time. We flew into Barcelona, spent three days there and then cruised with Disney for 7 nights. Here are our thoughts on how it was to cruise with Disney as only adults are why we are already planning the next trip.

Adult only spaces – Because this was an anniversary trip that was just the two of us, we spent a lot of time in the adult only spaces. As much as I love Disney, I was a little leery of whether or not we would be able to get enough of a break from the crazy of all the little kids. The great news is that this was really easy to do and the adult spaces on the ship were very private and spacious. Disney Cruise Line (DCL) offers adult only pools and sun deck, adult only restaurants, a spa, a coffee shop and several bars/lounges. We also were able to select an adult only option for a few of our port excursions. If you’re thinking about a Disney Cruise with your kids, have no fear you will still be able to use these spaces. The ship has kid’s areas for all age groups where you can drop your little ones off and go enjoy a little adult time.

Adults only pool bar. There were two pool bars and three adults only pool areas.

Spa – I was so impressed with the spa on the ship. The Senses Spa truly is a full-service spa and salon. I was shocked by the size of the spa and the extensive list of services that they offered. We enjoyed several services from haircuts to a couples massage. Senses had a full salon and barbershop, 4 stations for manicures and pedicures, a relaxation area with 3 saunas, therapeutic showers and heated lounge chairs, numerous massage rooms, and male and female locker rooms. The spa staff were top notch, and the cost of services was very similar to what we would have paid at home which honestly surprised me.

Fine dining – The Disney Dream offers two fine dining options: Palo and Remy’s. Palo is an Italian themed restaurant that offers brunch or dinner. We were fortunate enough to able to try both meals here. For us, brunch had a slight edge for being our favorite meal, but both were incredible. Palo can also be a great value. While the fine dining restaurants are an additional cost, you can eat at Palo for $45 per person (this is a prix-fixe menu for dinner) which is an incredible value for the meal you are served. Remy also offers dinner and brunch and is an additional cost. This again, is a beautifully themed restaurant which offers French cuisine. Remy’s was a prix-fixe menu, and the food was very high end. The service at Remy’s may have been the best service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. They are truly aiming to give this a first class feel! They even had a specific stool for me to set my purse on, so I didn’t have to set it on the table 😊. Even when we were dining in the regular restaurants on the ship, Disney had sat us with two other adult couples. I can’t help but think that this must be something that they are aware of and put thought into.

Brunch with an amazing view at Palo.

Entertainment – The entertainment on the ship also exceeded my expectations. There was always something to do! Every night there was a live show in one of the theaters. These ranged from Disney themed shows to a magician and a ventriloquist. The second theater played the newest Disney movies. There was also live music in the main vestibule every evening and in the lounges. Several of the entertainment activities were also adult only. We attended two cooking classes, listened to live music in the adult only lounges and saw a comedy show that was restricted to adults.

Adult only excursions – Because this was the Mediterranean Cruise where there was lots of sightseeing to do, you could book those sightseeing excursions through Disney. Each day there were a few different options of excursions you could choose that were adult only. I would highly recommend doing this. Don’t get me wrong, I clearly don’t have anything against kids, but we were aiming for a more relaxing, quiet experience on this trip. Having the opportunity to do adult only excursions allowed for less distraction when we were trying to explore the areas we had always dreamed of seeing.

So, what was it really like to take an adult only trip, on a boat, with 100’s of other people’s kids? It was actually a really nice balance. We were able to get a Disney experience, with Disney level service, enjoy seeing families enjoy themselves and also have a relaxing, peaceful adventure. Of course, there were those few times where areas were crowded, and kids were whining or running around but it was fairly easy to avoid those situations if you concentrated on the adult spaces.
